Some electrically operated circuits such as light dimmers and adjustable speed controls operate by modulating the current through a controlled element to limit the power to the load. For example, a triac may be used to modulate the current to the load, and the triac""s conduction angle may be varied to control the amount of current through the load and to dim or brighten the load.
FIG. 1 illustrates a conventional triac driver circuit 100 comprising a triac 101, which is connected in series with an AC source 103 to one of its terminals, and a push-pull output stage including transistors 105, 107. The gate of transistor 105 is connected to a voltage Vp1 and the gate of transistor 107 is connected to a voltage Vn1. The base of transistor 105 is connected to the emitter of transistor 107 via a capacitor 109. The bases of transistors 105 and 107 are connected to their respective control signals Vp and Vn, which are derived from the waveforms of the AC voltage VAC as shown in FIG. 2. The collectors of transistors 105 and 107 are connected to the load 110 via the diode 111. The circuitry 100 drives the triac 101 in a pulsed mode during positive half cycles of the AC voltage VAC, and the reverse direction drive for the triac 101 is performed during negative half cycles of the AC voltage VAC.
